SUMMARY:Visit the Bunker
DESCRIPTION:Built into the Holyoke Mountain Range by the federal government during the height of the Cold War\, the “Bunker” served as part of the Strategic Air Command until it was decommissioned and ultimately sold to Amherst College. Since 2002 FCI has also used a portion of the Bunker for the Five College Library Repository Collection. \nJason Fuller\, the Collection Manager for the Repository Collection at both the Bunker and the new FCI Annex\, will tell us more about the construction of this facility\, the history of its conversion from “sword” to “plowshare”\, and its current uses\, which include not only library but also geology and natural history collections. \nSome cautions: The temperature in the building\, which is almost entirely underground\, is 65°F; bring a sweater. Much of the building can be accessed only by stairs\, and the floors are concrete. There will be a few folding chairs where participants can sit for a short while during the tour\, but this tour may not be suitable for all members of FCLIR. There is plenty of parking.

SUMMARY:Encore: Combahee River Collective
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Brian Sabel \nSeminar: Civil Rights \nDuring the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and Second Wave Feminism\, Black Feminists realized that neither the Black Freedom nor the Feminist movements addressed their lived experiences as Black women. By the 1970s\, the Combahee River Collective\, one of the first Black Feminist organizations\, wrote that the limitations of organizing around a single form of oppression could be overcome with an expanded concept of ‘race\, class\, and gender.’ Activists today still rely on their crucial early insights about ‘intersectionality’ and ‘naming difference.’ \n

SUMMARY:Encore: Oneida Community
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Carol Walker\, Sally Keehn \nSeminar: 19th Century American Utopian Societies \nFounded in 1848 by the itinerant preacher\, John Humphreys Noyes\, this religiously based Utopian Society\, which started in Putney\, VT and later moved to Oneida\, NY\, challenged contemporary views on work\, gender roles\, child rearing practices\, monogamy\, and property ownership. The community’s insistence on life-long learning and determination to make all work enjoyable\, fostered a work ethic and well of industriousness that sustained the group for over thirty years\, making it one of the most successful and longest lasting communal experiments of the 19th century. Sally Keehn will discuss the Vermont years and Carol Walker will discuss the New York years. \n

SUMMARY:Encore: I Find My Mother
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Suzette Jones \nSeminar: Writing to Remember – Purple \nMy mother died a year and a half ago\, and I wrote the piece as I found memories of her while tending to her garden\, and the house where she and my father (still living in the house at age 100) have lived for thirty years. Other memories surfaced at my own house. It was an attempt to hold onto the positive but challenging gifts that she left me. \n
